How to Sand a Wood Deck Before Staining?

Before staining a wood deck, it is essential to sand the surface to create a smooth and even surface for the stain. You can do this using a sanding tool, such as an electric sander, sandpaper, or even a rented power washer with a sanding attachment.

It is best to start with coarse-grit sandpaper and work your way up to a finer grit to avoid leaving behind deep scratches. Once you have successfully sanded the surface, ensure to vacuum up any dust before proceeding with the staining process.

While it may seem like extra work, taking the time to properly sand your wood deck before staining ultimately results in a better-looking and longer-lasting finish.

Why is Sanding Important Before Staining?

When it comes to woodworking, the success of your project depends on proper preparation. That's why sanding is such an important step – and one that should never skip.

Sanding smooths out the surface of the wood, creating an even finish that will be easier to stain. If you don't sand before staining, the finish will be uneven and patchy.

In addition to creating a smooth surface, sanding removes any old finishes, stains, or sealers on the wood.

Different Types of Sandpaper

There are many different types of sandpaper, each designed for a specific purpose. The most common type is made from aluminum oxide, which is ideal for sanding wood. Other types include silicon carbide, which is suitable for metal, and garnet, which is best for plastic.
Each type of sandpaper has its advantages and disadvantages. Aluminum oxide sandpaper is the most versatile and can be used on various materials. However, it can also clog up quickly if not used properly.
Silicon carbide sandpaper is ideal for use on metal because it doesn't clog as easily as aluminum oxide paper. However, it can wear down quickly if used too often. Garnet sandpaper is perfect for use on plastic because it's very durable and doesn't clog up quickly.

The Best Type of Sandpaper to Use

With so many different types of sandpaper available, it can be challenging to know which one to use for your project. The best type depends on the material you're working with and the desired results.

For most woodworking projects, aluminum oxide sandpaper is a good choice. It is durable and effective at removing stains, paint, and varnish.

Use it correctly for the best results, no matter what type of sandpaper you choose.

How to Sand a Wood Deck?

Choose your tools before you start sanding. There are numerous ways to sand a wood deck. You can use hands-on sandpaper or a sanding machine. The latter will be expensive but will do the job more efficiently and effectively.

Start by cleaning the wood surface. Make sure the wood is free of any dirt and debris.

Then look for any loose or damaged wood and deal with that accordingly.

Next is to scrape off the old layer of paint/stain. It will help you see the wood underneath the previous layer and help you avoid any paint that is still on the wood.

After you have done all of these things, you can start sanding. You will need to use coarse grit sandpaper for sanding the wood. Sand the entire wood surface.

Once done sanding, vacuum the surface to remove any dust.

Now your wood is ready for staining.

Tips for Avoiding Common Mistakes

Here are the most common mistakes you must avoid when sanding the wood surface:

    icon
Use suitable grit sandpaper. We suggest using 80-grit sandpaper. It's best to smooth the surface while not weakening the character.
    icon
Sand when the surface is dried. The wet surface is hard to sand and will not yield the best results.
    icon
Inspect the wood before sanding. Remove or repair damaged wood planks and fix loose screws.
    icon
Sand evenly - try keeping the pressure even through the sanding process. We suggest using a sanding machine to ease the job while getting the best results.
    icon
Wear a mask to avoid breathing in the dust.

When to Stain the Deck After Sanding?

Staining after sanding doesn't require much time. You may start the process soon after phase one - sanding the wood deck.

Here we have listed the basic process of staining the deck. You may learn to stain the deck in detail here.

    icon
Apply the stain: Open the stain can and stir it well. Start staining the wood across the piece with a rag or brush. Apply the stain using long and slow strokes.
    icon
Wipe off the excess stain: Wipe off the excess stain after a few minutes of staining the wood. Use a clean rag to wipe it off.
    icon
Let it dry: Let the stain dry for at least 4 hours. After the stain dries up, decide if you want another coat or if the stain is good to go. Repeat the staining and wiping process if going one more round.
    icon
Apply a sealant (optional): If you want to give a longer life to the exterior wood and protect it from harmful effects, you may choose to apply a seal on the wood. Apply the sealant with a natural bristle brush in the direction of the grain.

Let it dry: Wait for 3-4 hours until the sealant is dried.
